Building and Growing a Digital Business
Founder

Context
I launched Dragaholic as an independent LGBTQ+ digital media and community platform focused on drag entertainment.
What began as a content-driven website grew into a business that also included merchandise, an events calendar, partnerships, and contributors.
Unlike my later work inside established organizations, this was a business I built and operated from the ground up.
Problem / opportunity
Growing an audience was only part of the challenge.
To build a sustainable business, I had to determine which features and activities were worth pursuing, how to engage the community, and how to create opportunities for revenue without losing sight of the audience that made the platform successful.
Time and resources were limited, so decisions about what to build and where to invest attention mattered.
My role
As founder, I owned the overall direction and operation of Dragaholic.
My responsibilities included brand development, website development, editorial direction, audience growth, contributor coordination, partnerships, monetization efforts, and ultimately the sale of the business.
Approach
- Built the initial platform. Taught myself WordPress, developed the brand identity, and created the website and content experience.
- Expanded the offering around audience interests. Added an events calendar and merchandise store to complement the editorial experience.
- Used audience behavior to inform decisions. Reviewed Google Analytics data to understand readership patterns and engagement, helping guide content and growth priorities.
- Balanced multiple business needs. Coordinated editorial content, contributors, partnerships, technical maintenance, and monetization while operating a growing digital property.
- Managed the business through acquisition. Negotiated the sale of Dragaholic to Q.Digital in 2015.
Impact & takeaways
- Generated approximately 3.5 million lifetime pageviews over 15 months.
- Built a social media audience exceeding 80,000 followers.
- Expanded the platform from editorial content into a broader community offering that included merchandise and events discovery.
- Successfully sold the business to Q.Digital in 2015.
- Experienced firsthand how decisions about audience needs, product features, growth, and monetization affect the sustainability of a digital business.
