Cross-Functional Engineering Leadership

Full-Stack Software Engineer L2

Context

At Curative, multiple engineering teams were building customer-facing healthcare applications, often encountering similar frontend challenges.

While individual teams focused on their own delivery priorities, shared concerns such as component consistency, developer tooling, and technical debt sometimes lacked a clear path to prioritization across teams.

Problem / opportunity

Improving the frontend experience required more than identifying technical issues. Those improvements also needed to compete with immediate customer-facing priorities for engineering capacity.

Without a coordinated approach, opportunities to improve shared tooling and reduce recurring technical friction could remain unresolved.

My role

I twice co-led Curative's Front-End Engineering Guild, a cross-team group that created space for engineers to identify common challenges and advocate for improvements.

My responsibilities included setting meeting agendas, facilitating discussions, coordinating with engineers across teams, and working with Product Managers and Engineering Managers to elevate shared technical priorities.

I also contributed directly to customer-facing product development, including the Employer Portal.

Approach

  • Created a forum for shared priorities. Helped organize recurring discussions where engineers could surface problems that extended beyond individual teams.
  • Connected technical needs to delivery priorities. Worked with Product Managers and Engineering Managers to discuss which cross-team improvements warranted attention alongside customer-facing roadmap commitments.
  • Advocated for reusable infrastructure. Helped advance conversations around Storybook adoption, component consistency, and reducing recurring technical debt.
  • Made improvement work more actionable. Supported the process of translating broader technical concerns into smaller, discussable work items that could be considered during sprint planning.
  • Navigated product tradeoffs firsthand. Separately, while contributing to Employer Portal development, collaborated with Product and Design to evaluate implementation complexity, API constraints, and scope adjustments.

Impact & takeaways

  • Established a recurring, cross-team forum for discussing shared frontend engineering needs.
  • Helped bring longer-term technical improvements into prioritization conversations with engineering and product leadership.
  • Contributed to turning broad engineering concerns into actionable work that teams could evaluate alongside existing commitments.
  • Gained firsthand experience navigating the tension between immediate customer needs and investments in product maintainability.
